Personal housewarming gift ideas (that aren't another candle)

Moving is exhausting, and the first weeks in a new place are full of boxes, hardware-store runs and not knowing where anything is. The best housewarming gifts help with that, or mark the moment. Here are eight that do one or the other. Only one of them is ours.

1. A map of their new neighbourhood

A framed 3D model of the streets around their new home, with their building marked in colour and the move-in date on a plaque. It's the gift we make, so we're biased, but it's the one on this list that's still on the wall in ten years. How to set one up.

2. A welcome box from their new street

Walk the blocks around their new place and fill a box from the local shops: bread from the bakery, beans from the nearest coffee roaster, a gift card for the restaurant on the corner. It doubles as an introduction to the neighbourhood.

3. A handwritten guide to the area

If you know the area, write it down: the good walk, the hardware store that actually has what you need, which day the farmers' market runs, where to get a decent slice at midnight. It costs nothing and gets used for months.

4. The first-week dinner plan

Nobody cooks in the first week. Bring dinner on moving day, organise friends to cover a night each, or send a delivery gift card with a note to use it when the kitchen is still in boxes.

5. A real toolkit, for first-time owners

Renters can call the landlord; owners can't. A cordless drill, a stud finder, a level and a good set of screwdrivers will get used the first weekend, and every weekend after.

6. A plant that suits their light

Ask which way their windows face before you buy. A pothos or a snake plant forgives a dark apartment; a herb pot wants a sunny sill. Bring it in a pot that drains.

7. A photo of them on moving day

Take a picture of them in front of the new door on the day they get the keys, then print and frame it. They'll be too busy to think of it themselves.

8. A day of your time

Painting the bedroom, putting the bed frame together, hanging the pictures that have been leaning against the wall for a month. Put it in a card as a voucher so they actually call it in.
